Name: Rheu-Trex 10 Tablets

description: Methotrexate is a folate antimetabolite that competitively inhibits dihydrofolate reductase and prevents the formation of tetrahydrofolate, which is required for the formation of thymidylate and purines, thereby preventing DNA synthesis, repair, and cellular replication. Methotrexate is indicated for the treatment of gestational choriocarcinoma, chorioadenoma destruents and hydatidiform mole. Methotrexate is indicated as meningeal leukemia prophylaxis and is used in maintenance therapy in combination with other chemotherapeutic agents for the treatment of meningeal leukemia. Methotrexate is also used as sole therapy or in combination with other anti-cancers in the treatment of breast cancer, epidermoid cancer of the head and neck, advanced fungicidal mycoses and lung cancer, especially squamous cell and small cell types, advanced non-Hodgkin's lymphoma.

how_to_use: Should be taken on an empty stomach. Best taken on an empty stomach. May be given with food to reduce GI discomfort. Avoid consuming it with products rich in milk.

Side effects that may occur when using the drug are:
Significant: Acute renal failure, bone marrow suppression (e.g. anemia, pancytopenia, neutropenia, leukopenia, thrombocytopenia); gastrointestinal toxicity including ulcerative stomatitis and diarrhea; malignant lymphoma (low dose), fertility disorders, oligospermia, menstrual dysfunction, pulmonary alveolar hemorrhage; encephalopathy/leukoencephalopathy; dermatitis considering radiation and sunburn; anaphylactic reactions, nonproductive cough, tumor lysis syndrome (in patients with high tumor burden), seizures (intrathecal).

Warning: MUST BE WITH A DOCTOR'S PRESCRIPTION.
Use with caution in patients with pleural effusion, ascites, folic acid deficiency; inactive and chronic infections (e.g. herpes zoster, TB, hepatitis B or C), risk factors for hepatotoxicity (e.g. persistent abnormal liver chemistry, history of more than moderate alcohol consumption, family history of liver disease, diabetes, obesity, hyperlipidemia), ulcerative colitis. The patient is dehydrated and weak. Patients undergoing radiotherapy and orthopedic surgery. Mild to moderate kidney disorders. Children and parents.
Patients are advised that this medication may cause fatigue and dizziness, if affected, do not drive or operate machinery.

Pregnancy category:
Category X: Contraindicated (not to be used).
