description: JARDIANCE is a drug containing empagliflozin. This drug is used as additional therapy to help maintain blood sugar in diabetes patients (sugar disease or diabetes). Empagliflozin works as a sodium-glucose co-transporter 2 (SGLT2) inhibitor. By inhibiting SGLT2 empagliflozin reduces reabsorption of filtered glucose and lowers the glucose threshold in the kidney. This increases the excretion of glucose by urine. When using this medicine, you MUST ACCORD TO THE DOCTOR'S INSTRUCTIONS. Side effects that may occur when using the drug are:
Bone fractures, genital mycotic infections (e.g. vulvovaginal mycotic infections, vulvovaginal candidiasis, vulvovaginitis, candida balanitis, balanoposthitis), hypersensitivity reactions (e.g. angioedema, urticaria), hypotension, acute kidney injury, UTI (including urosepsis and pyelonephritis), increased -density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C), lower extremity amputation.
Renal and urinary disorders: Increased urination. Skin and subcutaneous tissue disorders: Pruritus, rash.
Vascular disorders: volume depletion.
Potentially Fatal: Diabetic ketoacidosis. Rarely, necrotizing fasciitis of the perineum (Fournier's gangrene).

Warning: MUST BE WITH A DOCTOR'S PRESCRIPTION.
Patients with a history of genital mycotic infections, risk factors for which may predispose to ketoacidosis (e.g. pancreatic insulin deficiency, reduced insulin dose, caloric restriction, alcohol abuse, acute febrile illness, extreme stressful events).
Uncircumcised male.
Not intended for the treatment of type 1 diabetes mellitus and diabetic ketoacidosis.
Patients undergoing surgery stop treatment at least 3 days before surgery.
Kidney disorders.
Elderly.
