description: GLUCOVANCE TABLET is an anti-diabetic drug containing Glibenclamide and Metformin HCl. Metformin belongs to the Biguanide group of antidiabetic drugs, which works by inhibiting glucose production (gluconeogenesis) in the liver. This inhibition results in a delay in the absorption of glucose in the intestine, thereby reducing plasma glucose both basal and postprandial (after eating). Apart from that, Metformin also works by improving insulin sensitivity by increasing the uptake and use of glucose in peripheral tissues. In this way, there will be an improvement in glucose tolerance in type 2 diabetes patients. Metformin does not stimulate insulin secretion so it does not cause a hypoglycemic effect. Glibenclamide is a second generation sulfonylurea drug which can reduce blood glucose by stimulating the release of insulin in the pancreas. GLUCOVANCE is indicated as a replacement therapy in type 2 diabetes patients who have been given sulfonylurea or metformin drugs that do not provide adequate glycemic control.
