description: FORXIGA is an antidiabetic drug containing Dapagliflozin which is included in the SGLT-2 inhibitor group. This drug is used to help control blood sugar levels in patients with type 2 Diabetes Mellitus who cannot be resolved with diet and exercise. Dapagliflozin works by inhibiting the reabsorption of glucose in the distal tubules of the kidney by inhibiting the performance of the SGLT-2 glucose transporter. When using this medication, you must ACCORD TO THE DOCTOR'S INSTRUCTIONS. Side effects that may occur when using the drug are:
Hypoglycemia. Vulvovaginitis, balanitis & related genital infections, UTI, dizziness, rash, back pain, dysuria, polyuria, increased hematocrit, decreased renal creatinine clearance during initial treatment, dyslipidemia.
Warning: MUST BE WITH A DOCTOR'S PRESCRIPTION. Not for use in type 1 DM or treatment of diabetic ketoacidosis. Monitor renal function before starting therapy & at least annually thereafter; before starting concomitant medicinal products that may decrease kidney function & periodically thereafter. Discontinue treatment if renal function falls below CrCl <60 mL/min/1.73 m2, if ketoacidosis is suspected. Assess patients with signs & symptoms consistent with ketoacidosis such as nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, malaise & shortness of breath. Patients with predisposing factors for ketoacidosis, known CV disease, on antihypertensive therapy with a history of hypotension, with an already elevated hematocrit; heart failure. Evaluate patient for signs & symptoms of UTI & treat promptly if indicated. Not recommended for use in patients receiving loop diuretics or who have volume depletion. Monitor vol & electrolyte status. Temporarily stop medication when treating pyelonephritis or urosepsis. The test result was positive for glucose in the urine. Rare hereditary problems of galactose intolerance, Lapp lactase deficiency or glucose-galactose malabsorption. Moderate to severe liver & kidney disorders. Not recommended during 2nd & 3rd trimester of pregnancy. Should not be used while breastfeeding. Children <18 years old. Elderly. Pregnancy Category: Category C: Possibly risky. Drugs are used with caution if the benefits obtained outweigh the risks to the fetus. Research on animal tests shows risks to the fetus and there has been no direct research on pregnant women. Consult medical personnel if you are breastfeeding.
