Cefixime is an antibiotic that has a broad spectrum, active against gram-negative and gram-positive bacteria. This antibiotic is used to treat uncomplicated urinary tract infections, otitis media, pharyngiris and tonsillitis, as well as acute and chronic bronchitis with acute exacerbations. This drug works as a bactericidal with the mechanism of action of the drug by binding to one or more penicillin-binding proteins (PBP) which inhibits transpeptidation of the last stage of peptidoglycan synthesis in bacterial cell walls, thereby inhibiting biosynthesis and preventing cell wall formation which results in bacterial cell death. - Use during pregnancy:
The safety of using cefixime during pregnancy has not been proven. Cefixime should only be given if the therapeutic benefits outweigh the possible risks.
- Use in breastfeeding women:
It is not yet known whether cefixime is excreted in breast milk. Therefore, it is best not to breastfeed during therapy with this drug.
- Use in children:
